NCI Exmouth improvements

The Harbour View building and tower used by NCI Exmouth was designed and built for the old Exmouth Yacht Club over the winter of 1895 to 1896 to replace a corrugated iron Clubhouse on the Pier. It was opened in June 1896, on a site leased from Lord Rolle with the veranda and tower providing members with a good view of the racing. The building was requisitioned for military defensive use during the second world war and in 1988, the tower took on a new lease of life becoming the lookout station for the Exmouth branch of National Coastwatch Institution (NCI), with over 60 volunteer watchkeepers now providing a sea and beach safety search and rescue service.

Because of the lookout’s unique estuary position, the NCI are able to keep watch over all vessels, both motorised and under sail, in addition to kite surfers, windsurfers, jet skiers, fishermen, divers, canoeists, kayakers, paddle boarders, rowers, beach users and swimmers. In providing this visual watch for water and beach users, they deliver a valuable service to the local community and the thousands of holidaymakers that visit Exmouth each year. The tower was in urgent need of a waterproof protective coating on the outside of the lookout tower as they were experiencing water penetration internally. Stormdry Protection Cream was donated, providing a BBA certified, colourless, breathable water repellent barrier for the tower.

Buildings along the coastline can be subject to extreme weather conditions, so it’s vital the right products are used to help preserve and protect them. The Brewers Foundation were thrilled to support the National Coastwatch Institution in their mission to protect the NCI Exmouth lookout tower with the donation of 20L of Stormdry Protection Cream.
