Haydn eventually manages a visit to NCI Wooltack Point

For most Station Managers, visiting their station might seem like an everyday part of the job. For Haydn, Station Manager at National Coastwatch Wooltack Point, it was anything but ordinary.

Despite managing the station for the past eight years, Haydn had never actually been able to visit the station.
Living with MS (Multiple Sclerosis), combined with the challenging terrain and increasingly eroded paths leading up to the station, has made access extremely difficult.
An opportunity finally arose as contractors were completing the final work to replace the windows at the 94-year-old station.
The self-funded project included new front window frames and glazing, a new opening window to the right of the door, and a new window pane with a vent in the central front window.
Haydn was determined to see the fantastic job the contractors were doing. Getting him there, however, required a little local ingenuity!
To undertake the work, local farmer Rob had very kindly offered the use of his tractor to transport materials to and from the station. On the final day, that same rather impressive machine became Haydn’s transport, towing him up to the station and back down again.
At the station, members of the Wooltack Point crew were waiting to welcome him and mark the occasion.
For eight years, Haydn has successfully managed Wooltack Point with the support of his dedicated team, ensuring that the station continues to fulfil its important role in keeping watch over the coast.
Finally, being able to visit the station, see the work completed and spend time there with members of the crew was a special moment to remember.
And Haydn’s hope?
That it won’t be another eight years before he gets back there!
