NCI Fleetwood watchkeepers Sue and Simon have received National Coastwatch’s Certificate of Merit after their actions helped save the lives of two fishermen during an incident in July 2025.

Whilst on watch, Sue and Simon spotted two fishermen walking out from the shoreline. Initially there appeared to be no cause for concern, but as the tide changed, the watchkeepers became increasingly concerned that the men could become cut off.
Simon recalled:
“We first spotted them walking out to the Wyre Light, which is about a mile and a half out from here – quite early in the morning. We didn’t have any problems at that time. The tide was OK. But we kept an eye on them.”
High tide was at 2.24pm, and the tide was quickly coming in.
“Later on in the morning, we got concerned that they were potentially going to get cut off by the tide. We contacted the Coastguard and the lifeboat was called out. “
The Fleetwood inshore lifeboat was hastily launched. By the time it set off, the water had already risen to waist height and was continuing to rise quickly.
“By the time they were picked up by the lifeboat, they were neck-high in the water, probably about 200 yards away from us… from safety.”
The fishermen were brought back to the shore. Thankfully, neither was injured, and both were able to walk away.
The incident highlights the vital role of our watchkeepers in monitoring the coastline and raising the alarm when they identify a potential risk.
Fleetwood Station Manager Stuart said:
“In search and rescue, each organisation works together to ensure that the incident is acted upon as quickly and as effectively as possible. Thankfully, the casualties were rescued and brought safely to shore. I am very proud of our team and the role our watchkeepers undertook on that day, and also on every occasion they are on duty.”
In recognition of their actions, watchkeepers Sue and Simon were presented with the Certificate of Merit by the High Sheriff of Lancashire, David Collinge DL, at a ceremony held at NCI Fleetwood last week.
