NCI HOLEHAVEN MURAL COMPLETED

3rd July 2018. The NCI station at Holehaven is now immortalised in a giant mural.

Canvey Island is surrounded by a reinforced flood relief wall that was constructed as a direct result of the huge loss of life (53 souls) in 1953 following the North Sea tidal surge when the sea breached without warning and flooded the complete island. Almost every one of Canvey Island's 13,000 inhabitants had to leave their homes and this event has been remembered in a series of murals along the 262ft (80m) sea wall.

The National Coastwatch Institution mural is displayed on an area that was chosen for its large influx of day visitors and locals and it is hoped that this exposure will greatly assist with recruitment and awareness of the local NCI station.

About

Currently almost 60 National Coastwatch stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteer watchkeepers around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Filey in North Yorkshire.

National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are met.
