FIRST APPEARANCE AT THE LONDON BOAT SHOW

13 January 2014 We have kicked off the twentieth anniversary of NCI with our first ever appearance at the Excel Centre London Boat Show. Although numbers of visitors to the show were generally down on last year, there was no lack of interest in the National Coastwatch stand which was manned each day by watchkeepers from as far afield as Caister, Lee on the Solent, Gosport, Needles, St Ives, Southend, Mundesley, Lyme Bay, Swanage, Folkestone, Worms Head, Polruan and Prawle Point.

Great interest was shown in who we are and what we do, not least by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, a staunch supporter of NCI who visited us. Sir Alan Massey, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) paid us a couple of visits, second time around accompanied by Sue Ketteridge, Head of Strategy and Finance at the MCA (pictured below).

Although not listed on her scheduled visit, HRH The Princess Royal and Sir Tim Lawrence, both honorary NCI watchkeepers, deviated from their official walk-about on 8th January to come and talk to the team. They both congratulated NCI saying “you are doing a great job, keep up the good work.”

About

Currently almost 60 National Coastwatch stations are operational and manned by over 2600 volunteer watchkeepers around the British Isles from Fleetwood in the North West, through Wales, to the South and East of England to Filey in North Yorkshire.

National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are met.
